Located in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and around 15 miles northwest of Hull, is the town of Market Weighton.
The town's name is derived from Old English 'Wicstun', meaning 'settlement on the way', in reference to the Roman roads here, presumably Ermine Street and a second running between here and Malton. In 1251 a royal charter was granted to the town by Henry III, leading to it becoming 'Market' Weighton.
At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of All Saints. This dates back to the 11th century, with significant additions from the 13th and 14th centuries. The church is Grade I listed.
In 1787 William Bradley was born in Market Weighton. Growing to a height of 7 ft 9 in (or 2.36 metres), Bradley became known as Britain's tallest man ever verified. He travelled the country with a group of showmen under the alias: The Yorkshire Giant. Bradley died in the town of his birth, aged 33.
In 1847 a railway station opened in Market Weighton courtesy of the York and North Midland Railway. This was a junction situated on a line between Selby and Driffield, and another between York and Beverley. The station closed in 1965 as part of the Beeching cuts, which saw over 2,000 stations across Britain close in order to, supposedly, promote road travel. Today, public transport to Market Weighton consists of direct buses from York, Pocklington, Beverley, Hull and various other nearby locations.
