PPG Smoke Headset Review (The Discounted One!) | Avery Flies

When PPG Smoke came out with their headset, I REALLY wanted to review it. Unfortunately, at $550 I just couldn't afford to. Recently several issues came to light with their first batch, such as inoperative bluetooth and broken ANC, so the creators decided to sell off the remaining stock at $99 with the understanding that customers may receive a defective headset. Well, they sold the remaining ~100 units in less than 4 hours and I was one of the buyers. As luck would have it, I also received a fully functioning headset too.

The PPG Smoke Headset is just a pair of earcups with a microphone, presented as a ready-to-attch package for any flight helmet. It features bluetooth connectivity, hardwire radio connectivity, active noise cancelling, gopro audio output, gel ear cups, push to talk for the radio connection, audio and call buttons, a 6+and hour battery life, and a few other features that make it a really impressive setup. It also has the interesting feature of piping all audio from all sources - mic, bluetooth, radio - into the gopro recording output. This means, for example, if you use a 2-way radio during a flight, the gopro will have that audio recorded into it as well as your normal microphone inputs.

Several customers reported harsh or rude customer service when dealing with the company regarding this headset, especially when they went on liquidation sale. It seems to me that the heavily discounted headsets were more popular than the company was ready for and some stress was built up. I haven't experienced any of that with my communications - every email asking about status and shipping ETA was courteous and polite - but it would be disingenuous to not mention it.
