Inspired by Heinrich Isaac’s (1450–1517) Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen, Woebegone explores the shifting nature of longing characterized through the unfolding of mechanical patterns interrupted by moments of fury, restlessness, and perpetuity.
The lyrics of Innsbruck- expressing a poignant farewell to an Austrian town and a devotion to a love left behind there- initially resonated with my own sense of displacement and nostalgia during a period of deep personal reflection. However, over time my longing for what I left behind evolved into a yearning for the path ahead. Woebegone reflects this transformation through the quotation and fragmentation of the original lied. The piece distorts and at times satirizes its source material through juxtaposed octatonic pitch sets and sudden, volatile outbursts. The result is a meditation on memory, loss, and the bittersweet pull between looking back and moving forward.
