Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum 4 Floor Tour: Dr's Apartments & Nurses' Ward Wings & Medical Center

The Four Floor Tour is around 90 minutes - our tour guide Lindsay took us through the area of the Asylum that housed doctors and nurses. We visited Doctors’ apartments and the nurses’ quarters.

We also visited Ward F, where the most devious of patients were kept.
The first floor is also a part of this tour and covers the Medical Center.

A more in-depth history of the medical treatments performed in the asylum.
We also visited the admissions area and learned a bit about how and for what reasons many of the patients were admitted to the asylum.

There is so much history and so much to cover, it would be next to impossible to be able to really see it all in one day.

This building is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America, and the second largest in the world. The asylum was built between 1858 and 1881 to house 250 patients - however, during its peak in the 1950's it reached about 2,400 patients creating overcrowded and generally poor conditions.

This beautiful building was designed by an architect following what was known as the Kirkbride plan, which called for long structural halls or wings arranged in a staggered formation, This method was used to ensure that all connecting structures receive therapeutic sunlight and fresh air in abundance.
