In 1998, Gus Van Sant directed a shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, one of the most famous and influential horror movies of all time. Almost every scene in this remake is a 1-for-1 replica of the original movie, other than a few creative liberties that Gus Van Sant takes.

In this video essay, I discuss why Gus Van Sant made this remake and why this remake fails to achieve the heights of the original Psycho's mastery due to the lackluster performance by Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates and the bizarre directing choices. I also explain why this movie and its failure may have been a good thing for the movie industry.

The original Psycho features Janet Leigh as Marion Crane and Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, whereas the remake features Anne Heche as Marion Crane and Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates. The remake also features Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, and Viggo Mortensen.
