When it comes to all works of creation, man can be considered as the center of creation. Man possesses all the intellectual endowment, adaptability to various environments, ability to learn and master art, languages; in fact, all the other attributes you might know about man that are not common in the Kingdom Animalia. However, man does not carry the entire show when it comes to wonders of nature, especially among other animals. Here are 22 quick facts about lions you would love to share with your peers and loved ones!
1. Nearly all wild lions live in Africa. The only other place you find wild lions is in India.
2. Lions can weigh up to 190kg with females weighing up to 125kg. This massive weight enables them hunt down larger prey and to defend their prides.
3. Young lions are spotty, like hyenas, but the spots disappear as they mature.
4. The magnificent male manes attracts females as well as shielding the lion’s neck during fights.
5. Lions’ cubs from members of a pride are reared together, and they can suckle from any female in the pride. I bet we rarely find that among humans!
6. Lions can even live in deserts, as most of their water comes from their prey, and from plants like the Tsamma melon.
7. Lion can eat up to 40kg of meat in a single sitting! Lions have sharp pointed rasps on their tongues called papillae which they use to scrap meat off bones.
8. Lions can go for up to 4 days without water, but have to eat every day.
9. Lions hunt at night as their eyes are adapted to low light vision as well as during storms when their prey cannot see or hear them.
10. Lions are the only cats that roar together, sometimes the roaring lasting for up to 40 seconds. The roars are used to mark territories and could be heard even 5 miles away.
11. There are only about 23000 lions left in the world, and this causes a lot of concern among stakeholder bodies.

13. Lions are the laziest of the big cats, usually spending 20 hours of their day sleeping and resting.
14. Lions are very social creatures, living in prides consisting of up to 40 members. Of the members, up to 4 are males while the rest are females and their cubs.
15. Lions don’t only eat larger herbivores like zebras and buffaloes, they interestingly also feed on smaller animals like mice, birds, lizards, tortoises and hares.
16. Females do most of the hunting. Once the catch is ready, males eat first, followed by females and finally the cubs.
17. Lions are dubbed the kings of the jungle, but they don’t necessarily live in the jungle, they actually spend most of their lives in savanna grasslands.
18. Lions’ young are also called whelps or lionets, besides being called cubs.
19. Lions are the second largest cats in the world after the Siberian tiger.
20. Lions do not climb trees often, but can occasionally do so to escape biting flies on the ground, escaping a hungry herd of buffaloes or simply resting.
21. Lions can live for 12 years in the wild and up to 25 years in captivity.
22. Lions can run at a speed of up to 81km per hour. This would be in comparison to a cheetah’s speed of up to 130km per hour.
