Hannah Augustin (http://hannahaugustin.at/) explains the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL). GDAL is a computer software library for reading and writing raster and vector geospatial data formats which can be both used in the command-line and with bindings for other programming languages. Hannah also describes how to use the GDAL Python bindings and some useful tricks surrounding those.
