Tesla's IMPRESSIVE Strategy to Deal With Old Batteries

Every EV company now has to have a plan of recycling and reusing their batteries. And as sitting on the top spot of the EV industry, it should be no surprise that Tesla fully supports recycling of its batteries.
Tesla said it will make every effort to extend the life of each battery pack before scrapping and recycling them. The company's service centers around the world can handle any batteries that no longer meet customer needs, it said.

So, for the recycling process, Tesla says that it recycles 60 percent of the components from its lithium-ion batteries once they’ve reached the end of life. Tesla shared that it is developing a “unique battery recycling system,” known as the closed-loop battery recycling process. Tesla wrote in a report, “The closed-loop battery recycling process at Gigafactory 1 presents a compelling solution to move energy supply away from the fossil-fuel based practice of take, make and burn.” The company says lithium, cobalt, aluminum, copper, and steel will be recovered from this process and it expects to save money producing new batteries from the recycled materials, rather than buying new minerals for its batteries.

In this closed-loop system, the batteries are crushed and separated, and reused in making new batteries. In a closed-loop system of manufacturing, every new battery contains between 60-80% of recycled materials. Elon Musk also says that Tesla EVs have prevented 4 million tons of CO2 gases from entering the atmosphere.

Tesla produces batteries for its electric cars, but the cells are also useful for renewable energy sources like wind and solar. In Tesla’s recent Battery Day the company announced what Elon Musk calls a "massive breakthrough", the tabless batteries. They are more efficient and need fewer components. So far Tesla is recycling what it can and disposes of the rest responsibly.
