Starting the day for kids with autism can be a difficult time. For many people, learning to regulate your body and mind takes a lot of focus and this is where a sensory circuit can help.
Easy to set up at home and school, the sequence of sensory circuit movements are great for children with autism, or kids with ADHD. Everyone at home can join in too as it's just good fun!
The vestibular and proprioception sensory systems are often forgotten. These areas relate to where the body is in relation to the environment and the sense of movement. Through completing a sensory circuit, a child will experience a range of activities to prepare the body and mind for learning. The 3 stages of Alerting, Organising and Calming can be made up from a variety of tasks, depending on the individual child's needs. Different children may need differing lengths of time in each stage. For a child who bounces the minute they wake up may not need any kind of alerting and you can go straight to stage 2 and 3.
Sensory circuits are recommended by Occupational Therapists. Should you have any questions about your child taking part in a sensory circuit we suggest you contact your therapist first. The video demonstrates the type of activities you can set up and use for minimal cost at home and school.
