A very skinny male bear attempts to steal a fish from a large male bear. A fight ensues. The bear fight is not the interesting part of the video. Watch the bear that comes up and, in essence, breaks up the fight. Fascinating behavior.


The McNeil River hosts one of the largest seasonal concentrations of brown bears in the world. Bears fish for chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) as the fish are forced to pause their upstream migration due to the falls.

The structured viewing program at McNeil has been operating for almost 40 years without incident. Humans behave in a structured, predictable, manner allowing bears the freedom to go about their daily activities little or no human disturbance.
