Day three of my visit to Newcastle was supposed to be the journey back to London, but, the extreme hot weather further south meant that the ECML was closed south of York so our homeward journey was postponed for a day.
I decided to explore the Tyne & Wear Metro network, however St James to Tynemouth was closed for scheduled engineering work. An amended plan fell apart as soon as I entered Monument station and found that the heat had closed the entire network north of Monument except a shuttle from Regent Centre to the Airport. Plan Z was a trip to Pelaw. I nearly got stuck there as the heat led to a short suspension of all traffic.
It was very warm at Pelaw but I enjoyed my first ever journey on the Metro which will probable have been my only opportunity to travel on the original stock as it is soon to be replaced.
A proper exploration of the whole system will need to wait for another trip north.
