2013 was the beginning of new Olympic cycle. Many teams with many experiened players retired and it's a year to select and observe new players performance preparing for 2016 Rio Olympic. In 2013, World Grand Prix expand to 20 teams to participate and 4 teams played in one pool (Tons of weak teams in this edition). After 3 weeks preliminary round, top 5 plus Japan (host) play in final round by round robin to decide the champion.

Japan obtained the bronze medal in 2012 London Olympic. It was their best record ever for the half century. Head coach continued his term until 2016. In this tournament, some of the Olympic squad returned. #3 Saori Kimura (27yo, 1.85m) became the captin. #14 Yukiko Ebata (24yo, 1.76m), #13 Risa Shinnabe (23yo, 1.73m) were old squad. #6 Haruka Miyashita (19yo, 1.77m) was the new 2nd pass. Nippon middle blockers no old player remained in the squad. Japan hold 6W0L after 2 weeks. Their opponents really weak. Czech team was tier 3-4 amongst European team. If i not wrong, they were firstly invited to play in this World Grand Prix. In this week, #17 Akari Oumi (24yo, 1.71m) who was the best new player in V-league was in the squad. Japan lost to USA & Bulgaria in previous days. But mainly because they're not using the strongest lineup. In this match, #3, #14 & #13 combo appeared. This was supposed the strongest and most balanced amongst all lineup combo in 2013. #13 got 28 points & #14 got 25 points in this 5 set match. Vs tier 3 team, Nippon need to fight victory in 5 sets.
