How did the 'American Dream' turn into a living nightmare for the poor in 19th Century New York? The rich mansions of Manhattan became poor tenement slums. In this video, the first in a series on New York's slums, Jacob Riis (a social reformer) describes the genesis of its tenements: how immigration and trade resulted in the mansions of Manhattan becoming partitioned into overcrowded boarding houses and gardens filled with yet more rooms to rent. Within the constraints of a 25 by 100 foot lot, maximum densities were sought– crammed from cellar to garret with the poor. Accommodation was mean, filthy and overpriced. Find out the squalor that Riis uncovered in the 1880s and discover 'how the other half lived.'
