Tesla Cheap and Fast DIY Charging Setup- NEMA 14-30P (Dryer Outlet)- $35 and 20+ MPH Charging Speed

Having 2 Teslas, the Model 3 and Model Y, while living in a rental home presents some challenges when it comes to charging. Of course you can charge your Tesla using the standard 120v outlet that your mobile connector will plug into, but it is very slow. I have been seeing about 1% charge per hour with the standard outlet.

Being that this is a rental home, I cannot make any major upgrades to the electrical panel or to the home as a whole. But, I still need to find a solution to charge both of our Tesla's that will be fast enough to keep up with daily demand. Fortunately, just past our garage, we have a laundry room, which has a dryer that uses a NEMA 14-30 Plug. Tesla does sell an adapter for $45 that will allow you to use this outlet.

What I decided to do for a semi-permanent install was to add an outlet to the garage, and connect it to a plug adapter from the hardware store so I can then plug that outlet into the existing 14-30 that is in the wall. Now I am able to keep a mobile connector plugged into the wall at all times and charge at a much faster rate for daily use.

This install is pretty straight forward and only requires a few items to complete. After installing, this solution can later be removed and only require 1 hole to be patched in the wall. This is of course because the dryer is so close to the garage, but if you dryer outlet is farther away, you may need to explore other options.

After 5 months of use, I have found the splitter to be well worth the money, and this charging solution has held up great and worked out perfect for our needs, which again, includes 2 Teslas, the Model Y and Model 3, which are both daily drivers.
