Many years ago you could shake hands and agree the sale of a property and your word was your honour. Unfortunately, nowadays due to the sums of money involved and the international nature of the transaction, at the insistence of lawyers and to protect all parties, it is now common that along with a contract to purchase you will also pay a deposit.
