I recently picked up an old Contax Zeiss Distagon 28mm F2.8 and also got my hands on the Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 (it was super rare to find here in Germany). To test them both I decided to shoot this quick short narrative / cinematic sequence inspired by one of my favorite tv series "True Detective" (only season 1 though!). I always loved the dark, surreal feel of the final showdown in the last episode of season 1, so this is my own little take on that if you will. Maybe I'll do more of these.
Unfortunately it took us a lot longer to get to this place than I thought, so that we ran out of sunlight pretty quickly and I wasn't able to get some of the shots that I had originally planned. I even had to shoot some of the last scenes at ISO 4000, as we were stuck near a dark creepy forest. The Youtube compression will be hard on these scenes but on my computer it looked pretty good! The BMPCC 4K handles low light just really well.
I really like both lenses. The focal range of the Sigma 50-150 gives me plenty of options. It's sharp, has no focus breathing and is veryyy heavy. And it's not too expensive. Only get the IS Version of this lens though. The Contax Zeiss 28 has a nice vintage characteristic, but is still sharp and doesn't seem to vignette. I already ordered the 50 F1.4 and gonna build up my own little set of Contax lenses.
Here is what lens I used for which shot, if you were wondering:
00:00-01:03: Sigma 50-150mm
01:03-02:21: Contax Zeiss 28mm
02:21-02:52: Sigma 50-150mm
If this little test was helpful to you, I would appreciate every comment, like and subscription. Let's exchange what we know! :)
Thanks to my buddy Nils for giving a Matthew McConaughey like performance.
