1. Bungas
The term "Bunga" originates from the Persian language and refers to a rest house or a dwelling.
In Sikhism, Bungas were rest houses constructed for pilgrims visiting holy places.
Around Sri Darbar Sahib (the Golden Temple), these Bungas served dual purposes: providing accommodation to pilgrims and enhancing security for the shrine.
Sikh leaders, including S. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, S. Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, S. Kanahiya, and Bhangi Sardars, contributed to the construction of these Bungas.
Each Bunga had a manager called a "Bungai", along with stationed soldiers.
Most Bungas came into existence during the eighteenth century.
The first Bunga, known as the Akal Bunga (later Akal Takht), was founded by the Sixth Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. It marked the seat of Guru Ramdas, from where he supervised the construction of the holy Sarovar (water tank).
In total, there were 84 Bungas completed on all sides of the Sarovar:
These Bungas played a crucial role in safeguarding Sri Harmandir Sahib from invaders and ensuring the security of the sacred shrine.

2. Historical Context:
The region around Amritsar was under constant threat due to invasions from Afghanistan.
Invaders sought to weaken the Sikh community by targeting their holy places.
The holy pond of Harimandir Sahib (Golden Temple) was believed to possess miraculous powers and was a source of energy for Sikhs.
To protect the shrine, Sikhs decided to construct a row of houses (Bungas) around the Sarovar.
After the destruction caused by Ahmed Shah Abdali in 1762, Sikhs repaired the Sarovar and fortified the area with Bungas.
These Bungas not only provided accommodation but also acted as a defensive barrier against further attacks.

3. Ramgarhia Bunga:
During the Sikh Empire, nearly 84+ Bungas were constructed in the walled city of Amritsar.
The Ramgarhia Bunga, built by the Ramgarhia Missal (Sect), provided accommodation to devotees visiting Sri Darbar Sahib (the Golden Temple).
