This production was taped at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx in July 1981. It was first shown on television part of the "Broadway on Showtime" series in October 1981. Very few opening numbers of Broadway musicals can achieve this height of theatricality so early on. "The opening of Purlie is an eleven-o'clock number at 8 PM." -- Mark Robinson
