In every century there are tragic stories going back to Biblical times of people being forced to leave their homeland, their homes and often their loved ones.
One of the greatest and most beautiful depictions in music, is this heartfelt lament by Heinrich Isaac (c.1450 –1517).
Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen,
ich fahr dahin mein Strassen,
in fremde Land dahin.
Mein Freud is mir genommen,
die ich nit weiss bekommen,
wo ich im Elend bin.
Innsbruck, I must leave you;
I will go far from the streets I know
to foreign lands.
My joy has been taken from me,
I know not what will become of me,
Or where I will land in misery.
