Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Lok Sabha, strongly responding to the Opposition over the ongoing debate on SIR (Survey of Illegal Residents). Amit Shah clearly stated that there can be no parliamentary discussion on SIR, as it is a constitutional mechanism handled by the Election Commission of India (ECI). He emphasized that the NDA government never runs away from discussion, but the Opposition is misleading citizens by spreading lies about SIR. Referring to Articles 324 and 326 of the Constitution, Amit Shah clarified that only Indian citizens have the right to vote, and foreign infiltrators cannot decide the Prime Minister or Chief Minister of India. He further highlighted that SIR was first conducted in 1952 and continued without objection from any political party till 2004, and now, after two decades, the process is being reintroduced to ensure transparency, correctness of voter lists, and national security. Shah assured that the Election Commission is an independent body and holds exclusive powers to prepare and revise electoral rolls, making the SIR a constitutional, unbiased, and necessary step for safeguarding Indian democracy.
