What is disc surgery? What do spine surgeons do in disc surgery? We are going to be answering that question in today's video. What is disc prolapse? We have mentioned that in many of the older videos about the disc and how it moves out and when it compresses the nerve that goes to the leg and only then we will do a surgery.

When the disc in the neck moves out it compresses the nerve that goes to the hand. We have spoken about all this earlier. What do we do? If the disc is removed, will the cushion effect be lost completely? If that disc is not there what will you do? This is a common question that everyone has.

Please pay attention to what I say in this video. It can be endoscopic discectomy, or open discectomy, or it can be a keyhole discectomy, or tubular discectomy or it can be laminectomy discectomy. Whatever type of discectomy it is, if you see in the video the red part is the prolapsed disc. It has come out and is compressing the nerve that goes to the leg. The prolapsed part of the disc is only removed. The remaining part of the disc that is intact will not be removed. When we remove this part of the disc whatever be the type of spine surgery the part that has come out along with this, inside the cavity there will be free fragment disc. That will only be removed.

So If there is 40 gm of disc in the mid back and lower back the 5-10% of the disc which is protruding will only be removed. We will not disturb the remaining disc that is there inside. So the cushion effect will be maintained. The cushion effect will be long lasting for the patient. In order to maintain the cushion effect you have to do exercises. What we have to do is instead of removing the cushion entirely we will be preserving most of it. This is what we do to retain the cushion effect.

What I would like to repeat here is after doing a disc surgery doing spine exercises and spine muscle strengthening is very very important. All of you please remember that. Once the disc has prolapsed, again there are chances of discs to prolapse in your spine. To ensure that this does not recur, there is no option other than keeping our muscles strengthened. So please do exercises regularly. After this, ensure that the disc prolapse does not happen again.
