Sambuca di Sicilia - Borgo d'Italia

Sambuca di Sicilia, district of Agrigento, not far from south-west coast of Sicily. The town won the title of Italian “Borgo dei Borghi” in 2017, a special prize conceived to valorize the most beautiful Italian villages. Effectively, this small town built on a hill facing the artificial lake Arancio is an enchanting sample of an old Sicilian settlement, with a strong historical background and a typical rural atmosphere.
Founded in high middle age by the Arabs, the new conquerors of Sicily, who built a castle named Zabut on the top of the hill, the town had several masters during its life. Saracens lived here since the 1225 when their resistance against the Normans definitively ended and survivors were deported. The old saracen quarter is the legacy of that period.

The Arab district is probably the main attraction of the ancient village, a dense network of narrow streets, alleys and houses with one or two floors and sometimes external staircases, suddenly interrupted by a small square or a garden. But Sambuca is not only this, the town offers full of interesting worship buildings and noble palaces, witnessing its disputed past, located in the sixth century part of the town, the “out of the wall” part, comparing with the Arab district on the top of the hill.

Walking along the narrow streets of Sambuca is a relaxing experience. Even in sunny days shadows and altitude reduce the high temperatures. No traffic, no noises, just wind and birds singing. Several urban paintings and graffiti decorate the doors and windows, an artistic touch that fits very well with the mood of the town. I am sure you will love the walk. Take a breath at the belvedere square at the end of Corso Umberto, the main road. This is the best sightseeing place where you can admire ta wonderful landscape on Belice Valley with its colored countryside.

This film was filmed in 2020 during my first trip after lockdown for pandemic. It was an healthy moment after an hard period.
Filmed mostly with a Canon Legria, just few footage was taken with a GoPro Hero 7. The starting flight sequence from lake Arancio was filmed with a Mavic Air drone.
