2025-12-21 Razzle Dazzle in a 4Runner

I ran Razzle Dazzle as part of a road trip from Fort Collins, Colorado, down to the Saint George area in my 2025 4Runner. I’d never spent time in this part of Utah before, and this was my first trail day in the area. Since I was traveling solo, on a long road trip, and still needed the truck to get me home, I was specifically looking for something scenic, relatively easy, and close to Hurricane.

Before going, I read the few reviews that were out there. The trail was rated 4 / Moderate, but the comments made it sound approachable. One reviewer even called it “a little boring”, and another review from about 14 months earlier described it as an “easier trail”. Based on that, I figured it would be a good match for a mostly stock 4Runner, if I took it slow, used bypasses, and didn’t do anything dumb. I don’t normally wheel alone, but this one seemed reasonable given the rating and the feedback.

At the trailhead, I aired down to 13 PSI. For reference, I was running KO3 LT285/75R17 load E tires on Method 703 17” +35 wheels, and the 4Runner has a ReadyLIFT 2.5” SST lift. It’s got a little extra clearance from the lift and tire size, but it’s still very much a daily-driver style setup, not a rock crawler. I’m including those details for anyone trying to judge how this might go in a similar rig. I also posted a YouTube video that shows a few of the more interesting sections.

Weather was basically perfect, mid-50s, light cloud cover, almost no wind, and the trail was dry. I had to open a BLM gate to get to the trailhead, and I made sure to close it behind me. After that, it was a long stretch of desert trail to start. There are a ton of offshoots and little tracks that aren’t on maps, so I stopped a lot to confirm I was still on the TrailsOffroad route. I drifted off route a couple times and had to backtrack, but the app helped a lot. Terrain-wise, it was a mix of hardpack sand, some softer sand, and rock. I don’t remember any of the loose, chunky rocky stuff that’s common on Colorado trails.

The spot where things got real for me was the TrailsOffroad Waypoint 20 intersection (around 8.15 miles). From there, you can skip what the guide describes as “a long section of slickrock with a few minor obstacles”. In hindsight, that bypass probably would have been the smarter choice for a solo run in a 4Runner. Instead, I stayed on-route and did the obstacles (they’re in the video). In a more built rig they’d probably feel minor, but in my setup, they were enough to make me slow way down and pay attention.

I ran 4-Low for the whole trail, even though 4-High would’ve been fine for the long easy stretches. I engaged the rear locker a couple times, but I honestly don’t think I needed it. I also played around with the 4Runner’s Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) modes, mostly switching between rocky and sandy settings. That was more out of curiosity than necessity, but it was fun to experiment with.

Most of the day I was just focused on taking my time, not breaking anything, and enjoying the views. I’ve got other vehicles that would handle the technical spots more easily (more clearance and articulation), but I appreciated the longer wheelbase on the 4Runner in a few sections, it felt stable and comfortable if I picked good lines.

TrailsOffroad lists it as a 4-hour one-way, but it was more like a big loop, with a little lollipop “handle” section at the beginning and end, plus a few optional spurs. Once I hit the sand dunes, I tried to stick to the official route, but it felt like the lines out there shift around with the sand. I stayed “near” the route and worked through it without stressing too much about being perfectly on the track.

Overall, I’m glad I ran Razzle Dazzle. If I did it again solo in this 4Runner, I’d probably bypass a couple sections, but I’m also glad I did some harder parts and made it through without issues. It was a great first trail for the area, with relaxing desert cruising, some nice views, and just enough obstacles to keep it interesting. I’ll be back to explore more around Saint George and Hurricane. With so many trails out there, I’m not sure when I’ll repeat this one, but I’m happy I ran it this go round.
