Overtown is where the Black community lived even before Miami’s incorporation as a city in 1896. Black laborers – railway and construction workers – had already settled the area. They had come from all over the south, and also included a large number of Bahamian immigrants. Jim Crow laws required that Blacks live separately from whites, and this area was the only place Blacks were allowed to live. It became known as “Colored Town.” Almost half of the men who voted to incorporate the city of Miami were “colored.” Hip Hop Trending Video. Music video . Art . Viral
