Kamakis is a rapidly growing town located along the Eastern Bypass on the northeastern edge of Nairobi. Once a quiet agricultural stretch, the area began to take shape after the construction of the bypass and experienced explosive growth following its dualling between 2021 and 2023.
Improved connectivity between Mombasa Road and Thika Superhighway turned Kamakis into a development hotspot, attracting apartments, commercial buildings, logistics hubs, and entertainment venues. The town is now widely known for its nyama choma culture and emerging upscale estates such as VarsityVille.
However, Kamakis’ rapid rise has largely been driven by private real estate, with apartment construction outpacing public infrastructure. Challenges such as congestion, drainage issues, and pressure on utilities remain visible.
Today, Kamakis stands as a powerful example of Nairobi’s outward expansion, overlooked, underplanned, yet rising rapidly as a new urban center.
