Dalton-in-Furness Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cumbria (although historically in Lancashire), and around 60 miles south, and slightly west, of Carlisle, is the town of Dalton-in-Furness, sometimes referred to as Dalton for short.

In the Domesday Book of 1086 the settlement is recorded as 'Daltune'. Historically it was the original capital of the Furness Peninsula.

Dalton-in-Furness grew in importance in the 12th century after the Cistercian monastery of Furness Abbey was established a few miles away near what is now Barrow-in-Furness. A market charter was granted in 1239 during the reign of Henry III.

In the 14th century, Dalton Castle was built. Its construction was ordered by the monks of Furness Abbey for the protection of the town, in addition to serving as a manorial courthouse for the abbey.

In 1537 Furness Abbey was suppressed by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This brought about a decline in the town's fortunes. It would later see a recovery from around the 18th century with the discovery of local iron ore. This would later lead to the opening of the Furness Railway in 1846 as a means of transporting goods and passengers between the surrounding settlements.

One such settlement of particular note was Barrow-in-Furness. This had previously been a mere hamlet as late as 1800 before being transformed by the iron ore industry. The discovery of large deposits of haematite (a type of iron ore with a high iron content) in Barrow by industrialist Henry Schneider in 1850 transformed it into a major industrial town, which soon dwarfed Dalton-in-Furness in relative terms.

Since 1846, the Furness Line has connected Dalton-in-Furness to Barrow to the west, and Lancaster to the southeast, along Morecambe Bay. Also on this line are the picturesque towns of Ulverston and Grange-over-Sands.

In 1974 the historical counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, along with the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire, merged to form the ceremonial county of Cumbria. Since then, Dalton has been part of the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness.
