Hello everybody. For no reason at all I decided to make a video on the history of Ukraine and how it relates to Russia. We will go chronologically so I will spend less time on everything before the year 1800, talk about the Russian empire, the ussr as well as newly independent Ukraine and the current crisis that make life hard for it.
Naturally the more recent the time the longer I will talk about it. So let’s get started with the very basics. Ukrainian is an eastern Slavic language along with Russian Belarusian and others. For this reason for a very long time Russia and Ukraine were seen as the same thing by the world and by themselves.
In case you were wondering modern Russian and modern Ukrainian are about 75% mutually intelligible. That means about 3 quarters of the words are similar enough that speakers can guess what they mean.
Ukraine itself has a history sort of like Korea. Korea was invaded and controlled by Russia Japan and China for centuries because it was a small nation with strong neighbours. The same is true for Ukraine. It was invaded and controlled by the Mongols, then by the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Then gained independence in the Cossack era with Russian protection. Eventually Austria Hungary, Prussia and Russia would split Poland and Ukraine right along with it. So, some Ukranians lived under the Austrian and most under the Russian empire by 1800.
