Theoretical Physics Colloquium by Prof. Andrei M. Beloborodov.
This presentation was held live on March 3, 2021 as part of the theoretical physics colloquium series hosted by Prof. Igor Shovkovy at the Arizona State University. The series features high-quality interactive presentations on current advances in theoretical physics by active researchers in the field of theoretical physics.
Abstract for this presentation:
Magnetars are neutron stars with ultrastrong magnetic fields. The evolution of their interior generates heat and deformations of the star and its external magnetosphere. The release of magnetic energy powers spectacular activity including bright X-ray bursts and giant flares. There is growing evidence for magnetars being the sources of mysterious fast radio bursts, which are detected from cosmological distances.
