Las Zompopas, como se conoce en Costa Rica a las hormigas cortadoras de hojas son un género de hormigas alucinante, su capacidad de transformar la selva según avanzan es asombrosa, actuando como jardineras naturales del bosque. Cortan pequeños pedazos de hojas y las llevan a su hormiguero, donde amontonan la materia vegetal. No se alimentan de hojas, sino de un hongo que cultivan, y es el hongo quien se alimenta de la materia vegetal que ellas cuidadosamente cortan y amontonan en su guarida.

The Zompopas, as it is known in Costa Rica, leaf cutter ants are an amazing genus of ants, their ability to transform the forest as they advance is amazing, acting as natural forest planters. They cut small pieces of leaves and take them to their nest, where they pile up the plant material. They do not feed on leaves, but on a fungus that they cultivate, and it is the fungus that feeds on the vegetable matter that they carefully cut and pile in their lair.
