"It Was Written" is the second album by American rapper Nas, released on July 2, 1996, by Columbia Records. Following the moderate success of his first album "Illmatic" (1994), Nas aimed for a more polished, mainstream style with "It Was Written." Produced mostly by Trackmasters, the album moved away from the raw, underground feel of his debut and focused more on mafioso and gangsta themes. It also introduced Nas's short-lived supergroup, The Firm, which included rappers Foxy Brown, AZ, and Cormega.

The Firm was a hip hop supergroup formed in New York City in 1996 by rapper Nas, his manager Steve Stoute, producer Dr. Dre, and the production team Trackmasters. The group included East Coast-based rappers Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Cormega. Rapper Nature was also part of the group briefly, replacing Cormega after he left. Despite high expectations and hype from fans when they signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath label, The Firm's debut album, "The Album" (1997), didn't sell well and received mostly negative reviews. The album, which focused on mafioso rap themes and had production from Dr. Dre and Trackmasters, was criticized for leaning towards pop music. "The Album" was their only release, and the group disbanded in 1999, with each member pursuing their solo careers.
