GHOULS “N” GHOSTS (C64) is a dynamic action platform game from 1988, which is a sequel to Capcom's legendary Ghosts 'n Goblins. In the Commodore 64 version, the player once again takes on the role of Arthur, a knight who sets off into a dark, demon-filled land to defeat the forces of evil and rescue his beloved. The game retains the characteristic, austere atmosphere of the series: gothic aesthetics, constant danger, and an exceptionally high level of difficulty.
The gameplay is based on precise controls, platform jumping, and fighting enemies with various types of weapons, such as a lance, knife, or axe. Each opponent has specific movement and attack patterns, forcing the player to memorise levels and improve their reflexes. A distinctive feature is the armour system: after the first hit, Arthur loses his armour and continues to fight in his underwear, becoming much more vulnerable to death. Another hit means the loss of a life, which emphasises the ruthless nature of the game.
The levels are thematically diverse and filled with traps, opponents, and sections requiring precise jumps. Compared to the first part, the pace of the action and the number of enemies on the screen have been increased, and the location design places greater emphasis on rhythm and memorising the layout of obstacles. In the C64 version, the developers adapted the audiovisual setting to the capabilities of the hardware: the graphics retain the dark style of the original, and the music and sound effects create a tense, disturbing atmosphere.
