Dull, flat light can be the bane of street photographers. Without harsh light and shadow, or extreme conditions such as rain, snow or fog, many of the standard ingredients of a dramatic image are no longer available to us.
Many people resort to converting an otherwise boring image into black and white, in the hope that this will somehow turn it into an atmospheric, “classic” shot. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth, since good black and white photography requires either a wide range of tones or clear areas of contrast.
In this video, I show my approach to street photography in “boring” flat light and what I look for in an image on such days.
Enjoy the ride : )
