In this video I give an introduction to how the age of rocks are determined. This is called numerical dating and is based on the constant rates of decay of radioactive isotopes to their stable daughter isotopes. Radiometric dating allows dates to be placed on the Earth's timeline. These dating methods are critical to working out the ages of individual fossils and the rates of evolutionary change.
