Famous for its horses and fertile black soil, the steppe is the heartland of Russia. This is where Lenin created Russia's first nature reserve in Astrakhan, along the banks of the Caspian sea. The river Volga which flows into the delta, is burdened by pollution from the factories which line its bank. Yet the delta is still an oasis with herds of grazing Siaga antelope and brown bears playing courtship games.
