I was greatly inspired by this video - • Twin Peaks - The Beginning at The End (#11...
Twin Peaks (2017) features a self-reflexive quality with moments like Audrey Horne dancing in the Roadhouse to a CD of her own tune as featured on the official soundtrack, or Tammy Preston examining a screen-grab of Agent Cooper from season 2 against a mugshot of Mr C. Could it be said that Lynch and Frost were taking us for mugs? Or, is the content of this 18-part labyrinth a playful art collage based on abstract memories and sounds?
I am now convinced that the scratching sound coming from inside the old gramophone is in fact based off the Lynch/ Frost ident - this also seems likely considering that the final Part 18 one is silent. Since the electricity has blown and the Palmer house is now in the dark, it makes sense for the flashing outro logo to be silent. We are left with unrecorded sounds in the night of Twin Peaks. If Part 18 is 'the real Twin Peaks'?
Included also is an after-life scene from Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones, a film which garnered mixed reviews. Its bright and alluring style may have been seen as kitsch or silly to some critics but it still possesses a certain power in various scenes which depict a young girl's fight from beyond the grave. Like Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks she is the victim of child abuse, even if in different circumstances. I wondered if David Lynch had seen The Lovely Bones and made a note of the line 'listen to the sounds' but even if he didn't, this is a delicious scene of comparison as featured in this video.
