Jesus didn't just have male disciples, he had female disciples as well. The 12 were all men but Jesus even traveled with women. This was not a typical thing to do in Jesus' day. It crossed social and cultural lines and resulted in accusations being brought against Jesus for impropriety. We find examples of this in Luke 8 and 10 as well as at the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. This is also reflected in Acts 1-2.
