Time-lapse video showing the process of rendering by hand a coat of arms in scratchboard. The illustration will be used as the main visual on a wine label.
This coat of arms design is symmetrical, so I drew one side by hand on scratchboard and then scanned that and flipped it horizontally in Photoshop for the other side. After the two sides are fitted together, there is still some work to be done to make the drawing work. A Cintiq helps with this kind of digital drawing. Any time I have a symmetrical drawing like this where one side is drawn and then flipped for the other side, I always use a lighting scheme with the light coming from above and just slightly to the left. Then after the one side is mirrored to the other side, I beef up the shading slightly on the right side.
