Healthcare-acquired infections in long term care are infections that develop after a resident's admission to a long term care facility. Elderly residents in both acute and long term care settings are particularly vulnerable to infections, partly due to the age-related decline in immunologic function, but also due to the fact that antibody production declines with age.
This program, the first in a two-part series, provides nurses and others with an understanding of the importance of preventing healthcare-acquired infections in long-term care, starting with a review of infection control guidelines and procedures recommended by government agencies and professional organizations.
After viewing this program, the learner should be able to:
• List the six links in the Chain of Infection
• Identify the most effective means of preventing the transmission of pathogens
• Describe the key components of both Standard Precautions and Transmission-based Precautions
• Explain Safe Injection Practices
