Enjoy this audio storytelling of “Aliʻi at the Hukilau,” a featured selection from Mau ka Leo!
The photographs featured here show three Hawaiian aliʻi at a hukilau around 1915. They are Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole (1871–1922), Princess Elizabeth Kahanu Kalanianaʻole (1879–1932), and an elderly Queen Liliʻuokalani (1838–1917). The casual setting of these images demonstrates the mutual aloha and solidarity between the beloved aliʻi and the makaʻāinana.
Mau ka Leo is our online storytelling space that documents, preserves, and shares the priceless knowledge and stories around Bishop Museum’s collections. Many of these stories come from our most valuable resource, our very own staff.
