A very short tale from the pen of Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, first published in The Strand Magazine in September 1913. It subsequently appeared in book form in the volume 'Danger! and Other Stories' in 1918.

The story was also adapted for the stage by Conan Doyle himself, in collaboration with the American playwright Percival Wilde, in a production staged in New York in 1914. It also formed the basis of a British silent film, screened in 1925 but now lost.
