This is a comparison of the use of a standard phono preamp with RIAA equalization (normally used for playing post-war LPs ) and a special phono preamp without this RIAA equalization where the frequency response is untouched ("flat"), no bass boost and high frequency reduction like with RIAA.
The result was really an experience when I first played some records with the flat preamp. Of course the bass I was used to is slightly reduced but the amount of higher frequencies now being audible compensated this. You can hear that clearly in this example especially in the vocal section.
So I can really suggest to invest into a flat phono preamp for every 78 RPM record collector. I used a modified version of the "Muffsy MC Phono Preamp" including the offered power supply (15VAC to +/-15VDC). With slight modifications it fits to the 47kOhm imput impedance for MM cartridges and an adapted gain setting by changing 2 resistors and 2 capacitors; it can be used directly between your turntable output and your Amplifier / Soundcard Line In.
