Soil isn't just a mass of withered rock. It is more than that. Many large and highly populated communities of living organisms, survive in the soil. They may be many different fossorial animals like different types of insects or some annelids like Earthworm or even the vertebrate species like snakes and other animals; May that be large amount of microscopic bacteria, protists, fungi and actinomycetes, they contribute to shape the soil fertility.
There are parasites as well, those may be some pathogenic microbes or some nematode species, soil is thriving with a diverse range of soil microflora and other living beings. The exudates secreted by the roots adds to the fertility of soil and survival of those recyclers of biomass, found under the soil.
This video is about the plants interacting with soil and even above the soil. In the next part we are going to discuss the mycorrhizae and this video would be useful to understand that symbiotic association of roots with the fungal hyphae below the soil.
