This quote was made by the American psychologist **R. S. Woodworth**.
He said this in his book *"Psychology"* (first edition 1921), which summarizes the historical evolution of the definition of psychology.
*Explanation of the quote:*
*Soul:* The earliest form of psychology was part of philosophy, where the soul or psyche was discussed. Many people, starting from Aristotle, studied the soul as the basic essence of man. But since the soul was impossible to measure or observe scientifically, it was excluded from the scope of scientific research in psychology.
*Mind:* Psychology was then defined as the "Science of Mind". William James and other early psychologists began to study the processes of the mind. But the term "mind" was also abstract and vague about its nature, not specific enough for scientific measurement.
*Consciousness:* Wilhelm Wundt and his constructivist followers then defined psychology as the "Science of Consciousness". They attempted to analyse the components of consciousness through introspection. However, Freud and other psychologists showed that most of human mental activity is unconscious, and that focusing only on consciousness is not possible to understand the whole mental life.
*Behaviour:* Finally, in the early 20th century, J. B. Watson and the behaviourists (Behaviourism) defined psychology as the "Science of Behaviour". They argued that only observable and measurable behaviour is suitable for scientific study. This definition helped establish psychology as a rigorous and objective science.
This quote from Woodworth beautifully captures the evolution of the subject matter of psychology, which has transformed it from philosophical speculation into a modern, experimental science.
