The Mereenie Loop Road is renowned as one of Australia’s toughest outback routes, often called the Caravan Killer. 😱😱
Despite the warnings, we took on this challenging 160 km stretch FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME, connecting some of Central Australia’s most iconic destinations, including Uluru, Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), Kings Canyon (Watarrka), and the West MacDonnell Ranges (Tjoritja).
The Mereenie Loop features rugged terrain, with corrugations, boggy sand, and washouts making it a test of endurance. Along the way, we faced unexpected obstacles, including getting bogged and a tricky maneuvers to turn our 21'6ft Royal Flare Aussie Mate caravan towed by our Hino 4X4 Crew Cab Truck on various narrow bush tracks.
But as with many outback adventures, the toughest moments often lead to the most rewarding experiences. After a tense drive, we found ourselves camping under the stars at Finke Gorge National Park (Finke River Camp), in one of the best camping spots we've ever had the privilege to experience. ❤️🌏
We then made our way towards the West MacDonnell Ranges, discovering some of the region’s best gems like Ormiston Gorge. This outback environment offers ✅ stunning wildlife, ✅ mesmerizing landscapes, and ✅ plenty of adventure. It’s a must-see stop on any Red Centre itinerary.
In this video, we share how we prepared our caravan and Chevy for this rugged off-road journey, ensuring we made it through the Mereenie Loop without any damage. While it’s not a road for the faint-hearted, for those with the right off-road setup and an adventurous spirit, the Mereenie Loop provides access to some of the most beautiful and remote parts of Australia.
Join us as we navigate this tough outback road and uncover the hidden treasures of Central Australia, from spectacular gorges to serene campsites under the stars.
