In my previous video ( • Quick evaluation of an ADF4351 frequency s... ) we saw that the main disadvantage of a low cost ADF4351 frequency synthesizer module, is the accuracy and stability of the on-board reference oscillator. It has a specified accuracy of 50 ppm (15 ppm measured) and is sensitive to temperature changes.
The obvious solution is the replacement of the on board oscillator, or simply its isolation and feeding the synthesizer reference input from an external better oscillator.
To isolate the onboard oscillator two smd components must be removed: one 0Ω resistor and a 10μH inductor.
The available oscillator is a 10MHz OCXO which can be calibrated with an external multiturn trimmer potentiometer.
As all OCXOs a substantial warm-up time is necessary. Let us watch in time lapse the first minutes of the operation of the upgraded module.
We can see that after 5 minutes, the output frequency is within 1ppb of the desired frequency.
