GETZ/GILBERTO. REUNITING PLAYERS TO CELEBRATE JAZZ’S TOP SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME
Niels Lan Doky interviewing Monica Getz on the difficult birth of the most famous Jazz album ever.
Line-up: Daniel Rolim (guitar and vocals/BR), Nancy Harms (vocals/US), Gabor Bolla (tenor saxophone/HU), Graig Earle (bass/CA), Jonas Johansen (drums/DK)
The original cast of this hugely successful project, which accumulated over 5,000 tickets sold at the now defunct The Standard Jazz Club in Copenhagen, reunites for the first time since 2016 for this very special engagement - with Monica Getz as a guest of honor.
What could be more natural for this occasion than to reunite this quintet to revisit what is not only Stan Getz’ greatest success but also the top-selling jazz album of all time, with reportedly over 42 million copies sold since its initial release in March 1964 by Verve Records.
In the tradition of the “Jazz Masterworks Series” - a concept coined by the Niels Lan Doky International Jazz Collective - the group will live perform and re-interpret songs from the “Getz/Gilberto” album, using the same instrumentation as on the original album.
“Getz/Gilberto” is considered the record that popularized bossa nova worldwide. It features American saxophonist Stan Getz alongside Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto, performing songs mostly composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim (Tom Jobim). The album also features the vocals of Astrud Gilberto on two tracks, "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Ipanema") and "Corcovado".
“Getz/Gilberto” was included in Rolling Stone's and Vibe's lists of best albums of all time and was widely acclaimed by music critics, who praised Gilberto's vocals and the album's bossa nova groove and minimalism. “Getz/Gilberto” received Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group and Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical; it also became the first non-American album to win a Grammy for Album of the Year, in 1965.
