The champions are back! Brazil thrash Spain at the Maracanã
The final of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup was a soccer match that determined the champion of the competition. The match between Brazil and Spain took place at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 30. It was the first time that Spain had taken part in a Confederations Cup final. Brazil, meanwhile, took part in their fifth final and third in a row.
Brazil beat Spain 3-0 to win their fourth title in the competition, their third in a row after winning the 1997, 2005 and 2009 editions. This was Spain's first defeat since August 10, 2011, when they lost to Italy in a friendly. In official matches, their last setback came in the opening game of the 2010 World Cup, a 1-0 defeat to Switzerland. Gerard Piqué's dismissal in the 68th minute was the first for a Spanish national team player after 91 games (since Xabi Alonso in September 2007).
