The Great Alpine Highway (State Highway 73) connects the west and east coasts of New Zealand's South Island and traverses the Southern Alps.
This scenic drive takes you from Kumara Junction on the west coast to Springfield, located on the eastern side of the mountains.
After passing through Arthur's Pass, you'll notice a dramatic change in vegetation and weather over a short distance, transitioning from dense temperate rainforests to mountains with sparse tree cover.
