A Black Hebrew Israelite Tried to Convert Me |

Have you ever had an encounter with the religious sect known as Black Hebrew Israelites. They can seem somewhat intimidating as they stand on corners and shout down those who pass by, yelling out Bible verses about how they are the “true Jews.” I’ve been there. On this episode of Theology Applied, I’ll tell you a story about one of my encounters with a Black Hebrew Israelite. This story is for the purpose of helping you defend your faith not only against BHI’s, but against any religious sect claiming that you can be made right by the Law of God.

Black Hebrew Israelites do not believe that a person is justified by faith alone in Christ alone, but by works or a combination of Christ and works. Their claim to racial superiority is a farce and a smokescreen for their belief that men and women can get to God by some other means than by coming exclusively to God through Jesus Christ. The Bible does not teach racial superiority or that anyone can come to God on their own merits. In fact, the Word of God says the exact opposite. “Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident” says, the Apostle Paul (Galatians 3:11). In Galatians 3:24 the Apostle informs us that the Law is “tutor to lead us to Christ.” In the final assessment of Christ and the Law, Paul states in Romans 10:4, “For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Anyone who believes can be saved.

Scripture does not teach salvation by ethnicity or nationality and this comes from a man (Paul) who was an actual Hebrew Israelite. When Paul consider his ethnicity, his nationality, and all that came with it he counted it as loss for the sake of Christ (Philippians 3:4-7). Christians need not fear when they encounter groups like Black Hebrew Israelites. Legalistic systems must be pinned to the Law if they are appealing to the Law for salvation in order to show them their need for the Savior. I want to show you how you can do this by telling you my story.
