Timothy Selman is the Assistant Director of Music at St Wulfram’s in Grantham
and will take up the post of Organ Scholar in Southwell Minster in September.
He was formerly the Assistant Director of Music (and for a time Acting Master of
Music) at the York Oratory, and prior to this held the position of Organ Scholar at St
Barnabas Cathedral in Nottingham, studying under Robert Gower. He has received
tuition from John Bradbury, Keith Wright, Peter Wright, David Pipe, Ben Morris,
and is currently studying under Rosemary Field.
As an active organ recitalist, he has given recitals across the country, from
Newcastle Cathedral to All Saints North Street, and Central Methodist Church in
York; to the Parish Church of St Wulfram’s in Grantham, and the Parish Church of
St Bartholomew in Wilmslow. In March 2023, he performed with the English Pro
-Musica, with a performance of Handel’s Organ Concerto in B flat (Op. 4 No. 6). In 2023 he will be giving a recital in Melton Mowbray Parish Church, and is delighted
to be returning to Howden Minster.
Timothy assists with the running of a chamber choir Caelestis, which sings services
in the nation’s cathedrals and major parish churches. Caelestis makes around five residential visits a year, and hosts a number of concerts in addition. The repertoire
varies from Gregorian chant through to Anglican and contemporary liturgical
choral repertoire. Previous visits have included: The Chapel Royal at Hampton
Court Palace; Selby Abbey; Leeds, Beverley, and Doncaster Minsters; Sheffield
Cathedral; and Ripon Cathedral. This summer, Caelestis will be singing at Bradford
Cathedral at the August Bank Holiday weekend, followed by a week long residency
in York Minster.
Timothy has also has developed a career as a musical director and conductor in the
theatre, spanning Musical Theatre and Opera. Having developed an interest for
Gilbert & Sullivan at The University of Nottingham, Timothy not long after
relocated to York where developed a career as a Musical Director. He has Musically
Directed for shows like Made in Dagenham, Kiss Me Kate, Oklahoma and also was the
MD for the amateur premiere of A Secret Diary of Adrian Mole with Pick Me Up
Theatre. He also has worked with York Opera, assisting with The Gondoliers and
Carmen, and in November 2022 was the Musical Director for H.M.S Pinafore at the
York Theatre Royal with a full orchestra.
Aside from his work as a musician and teacher, he enjoys walks in the countryside,
photography, sampling wine and visiting heritage cities.
